Legal Admissibility

BS 10008 (previously BIP 0008:2004 ) is issued by the BSI under the title the Code of Practice for Legal Admissibility of Information Stored on Electronic Document Management Systems. This document provides guidelines to those responsible in an organizations for ensuring that as far as is possible, electronic documents including scanned images will be accepted as evidence by the courts.

The document underlines that the process under which documents are managed is as important as the technology used – where a document is reproduced (e.g. printed), it should accurately reproduce the contents of the "original".

The code stipulates that organizations should produce their own Information Management Policy Document and ensure that any organization to who they entrust their vital information should also have a policy document.
